This year over the Winter I've arranged for garage space and I'm going to
put a new chain and sprockets on my 2006 Honda Shadow 600 (11,000 miles),
adjust the valves, inspect everything, do all the maintenance suggested in
the shop manual, etc.
The air cleaner filter looks pretty nasty. I'll naturally change that, too.
I'm a first time bike owner. Is there anything else I should do that I
might not think of?
My goal is just to have it perform flawlessly with no hassles next year
(2009). I don't mind doing stuff a bit early. I'm doing the chain a bit
early (for example). But that is so I can avoid having to deal with it
during next year's riding season.
I'm probably going to detach the swingarm, repack the bearings, treat a
little corrosion, etc. Should I also be repacking the steering bearings?
Thanks for all advice.

Just do all the maintenance items listed in your owner's manual that
are supposed to be completed at the nearest maintenance interval.
If you're not sure that the prior maintenance items on the schedule
were done, do those too. I guarantee if you do *everything* listed
on the maintenance schedule that is required at 12k miles, you will
have done more maintenance than 95% of all motorcycle owners.
Unless you have done a lot of riding in the rain or on dirt roads you
won't *have* to repack the steering head bearings at 12k miles. But
I know you are somewhat, ah, unusual in your approach to maintenance
so by no means would I discourage you from doing it, especially if
the maintenance schedule recommends it.

Why don't you go ahead and replace the frame, just in case cosmic
radiation has disrupted the atomic structure of the steel tubing?
Ya can't be too safe, yannow...

Thanks for the suggestion.
I've ordered the new frame ($1,070 + shipping). Are there any web pages
you're aware of or any technical documents you can send me explaining how
often I should replace the frame due to cosmic radiation. Is every 2 years
often enough?

How are the tires?
New tires at the end of the season are a great way to start the new
season. If you have 11K on the bike, the back one might need replacing
by end of the season. I've never been able to coax more than 12 out of
a rear on my Valk or Electraglide.. but YMMV.
