Bike Week packing lists: then and now

 

1987; riding from Herndon, Va to Astor, Floridan, to camp on the St.
John's River some 35 miles west of the Speedway.   I was on my 1973
Ducati 750GT and my brother Matt was on his 1986 Yamaha SRX-6.  Two
kick-start only bikes with no storage capacity or windscreens.  I had
a tank bag; so did Matt.  I added a set of nylon saddlebags;
everything else was bungee corded to the passenger seats of the bikes.

Here's what I carried:

1. 2-man tent
2. tarp
3. one wool blanket
4. Tool roll
5. Spare quart of oil
6. chain lube
7. sunscreen
8, toiletry kit
9. rain suit
10. hatchet
11. Spare inner tube, tube patches, three tire irons, bicycle tire
pump
12. Pair of lightweight riding gloves
13. Pair of tennis shoes
14. U.S. Road atlas and Florida state map
15. Paper with directions to the Florence, SC KOA campground for our
halfway point overnight stop
16. $200 cash - budget for the entire trip
17. Spare pair of jeans; sweatshirt, three changes of socks, shorts,
and t-shirts

Here's the packing list for Daytona 2010, carried in the hard bags and
chopped TourPak of my '06 Harley Street Glide with electric start,
fairing, soft lowers, cruise control, and AM/FM/CD player, staying at
Dave's house halfway, and at a St. Augustine hotel when we get there:

1. VISA and ATM cards
2. toiletries kit (now includes prescriptions and various medical
devices not invented in 1987)
3. rain suit
4. pair of tennis shoes
5. lightweight riding gloves
6. sunscreen
7. clothes for 5 days
8. liquid wax and microfiber polishing cloth
9. tequila
10. GPS
11. digital camera
12. laptop computer
13. cell phone
14. USB card reader
15. cellular modem card
16. selection of blues and roots rock CDs

That's a good point.

But look at his packing list for 2010.

Who the heck takes a *laptop computer* to Daytona for *party week*,
unless he totally lives in cyberspace?

 




I agree, all  you need is your iPhone.
Laptops are so 2006.  :-)
