After a few years dorking around with AutoComm, et al, several FRS, GMRS,
and CB systems and $1500 later, I finally found the answer. I almost hate to
say it because of the possibility for abuse and misuse, but bluetooth
cellular headsets have come of age. Cardo Systems's Scala Rider in
particular. In brief testing in a Shoei Z-ii (loud!) wearing -24 dB
earplugs, conversation was easy and noise free to over 70 mph. Wind noise is
just beginning to be audible at 45'ish, but not noticeably more than from
any other outdoor setting. It isn't till 90+ mph that noise overwhelms the
system. Both parties will have to shout then to be heard. Active noise
cancelling; AGC that works; VR dialing even at speed; no sewer tunnel echo;
simple, semi-permanent helmet installation. The only downside, and it
doesn't diminish its utility for me, is that it doesn't work off helmet.
Also, you might want to check alternatives if your left ear doesn't work
well; the mic boom doesn't reverse to allow simple installation for the
right ear. Maybe you can splice a longer earpiece cable if you have that
need. I would be interested to hear how well other bluetooth headsets
compare for bike to bike use. I'm still in the market for one more set.

Is it going headset<->cellphone<->cellphone<->headset or simply
headset<->headset?

Acts just like a regular bluetooth headset. You can call any cellphone,
headset or no.

headset to cell to cell to headset (if present).

150 bucks!

$90 at TigerDirect and a few other places. (Google for motorcycle
bluetooth.) The adapter for non-Bluetooth phones adds $25. (Google for
bluetooth cellphone adapter.) That would be well worth the price if it helps
connect the headset to walkie-talkies. I'm concerned that the link would
have to be 'hot' to hear the other guy talk, rather than waking out of
stand-by when it hears audio on the radio.

Cellphone to cellphone, with bluetooth headsets on each end. We already have
the cellphones, and their duplex nature (both can talk at the same time) is
slightly more friendly than simplex walkie-talkie.

I guess your question is whether we use them like Chatterboxes and such,
direct from headset to headset. The answer is no, Bluetooth won't do that.
There are Bluetooth adapters for phones that don't support it directly.
These plug into the earphone and mic jacks, and would probably work with FRS
or CB. We already have PTT buttons on the handlebars from earlier equipment,
so maybe that would be workable also.

(So I just ordered the other headset, this one with an adapter. I'll give it
a try on the CB. If that works out, I'll pick up an adapter somewhere for
the first unit. As much as I dislike simplex, I dislike dialing and waiting
for the call to pick up even more.)
