Slow, rich running, followed by harder running that partly burns the
soot off the plug.
Really tricky old dudes that know about such stuff might consider
indexing the
spark plug electrode to line up with the intake valve to make it run
cleaner.

Actually the flame front propagates from the spark gap symmetrically.
Or functionally close to it.

Actually, the fuel and air molecules have to seek out the spark, in
order to become "enlightened".
The ground electrode acts as a barrier to such spiritual progress,
unless a knowledgeable mechanical guru "indexes" it in another
orientation, whilst
chanting, "Om mani padme hum"...
