A few months ago I scored a set of exhaust pipes for the Valkyrie
Interstate.  They were cheap at $144 with free shipping, no significant
dents, but with crappy, rusty chrome.  Had them ceramic coated black and
waited for a good time to install them.

Spent all weekend on the exhaust, along with rebuilding the clutch system
and tightening various bolts and whatnots.

It's quiet!

It's so quiet now that I can actually hear the engine, tires, and the radio.

With all due respect for the "Loud Pipes Save Lives" crowd, this is way
better!  No more droning on the freeway, and I don't think I'll need
earplugs anymore.

I don't notice any increase in power, but then I haven't had it on the
freeway yet, which is the only place I can risk opening her up.  it's
unlikely it was rejetted, as recommended, when the loud Cobra pipes were
installed, but it's going to the dealer anyway for a valve adjustment, carb
sync, and general checkup, so I'll have them check out the jetting.

When I got the exhaust off, I noticed the clutch slave cylinder was exposed,
so I went ahead and rebuilt the clutch system, since it was on my to-do list
and I already had the parts.

When I disconnected the hoses, I saw clutch 'fluid' ooze out.  It actually
looked like it was taking a shit.  When I pulled the slave off, the housing
came off, and the guts were stuck to the operating rod.  The master cylinder
was so gooped up I had to take it off and scoop out the crud.

So much for "meticulously maintained" as described by the seller.

Had I left the clutch for a later time, I t may very well have just clogged
up and quit, leaving me stranded and screwed.

A successful weekend.

Please don't think that. Tinnitus is not fun. Wear them.

Well that makes two bikes quieted this weekend.

Successful indeed, but neither of us will be saving lives, either....

"Think again".  What will kill your hearing, and give you tinnitus,
is the wind noise.

Wind noise can cause tinnitus and/or hearing loss, but the amount and
volume of wind noise varies a lot depending on the bike, fairing and/
or windshield, road speed, rider's height, and lots of other
variables.  I always wear earplugs while racing, and I tend to wear
earplugs on day-long and multi-day trips, but pretty much not on any
other kind of ride, and have no tinnitus or hearing loss after 33+
years of riding.
