A couple of us are planning a trip up the Blue Ridge Parkway, south to
north, in the spring.  We're thinking 2-4 days, camping or staying in
cabins or cheap motels.  Any advice as to where to stay, what to see,
fun roads along the way, etc. would be appreciated.

I think that Ex-AMA roadracing champ, Jamie James, owns the French Quarter
Cafe in Black Mountain, NC (15-20 miles above Asheville just off the BRP).
We stopped by a few years ago. Jamie was in that day and he sat with us and
discussed mc roadracing to 90 minutes. Really a nice man and the restaurant
had great food.

Keep your tank filled when you can.  Stations may be close to the PW but
invisible and those on the PW are few and sometimes far between.  Try to
pick a time when the mountain laurel are blooming.  If you can, try turning
off your lights at night (obviously while going very slow with no traffic) -
the effect of the stars above and lights below is right out of Star Trek.
Take pictures.  Enjoy!

Thanks for all the responses so far.  I'm making a list of all your
suggestions.

I did it North to South last year in the middle of May. Cold foggy and wet
on Mount Mitchell.

We camped at Otter Creek. Hosted -- nice sites -- restaurant within walking
distance if you didn't want to cook.

Very little traffic and no enforcement that we saw. Tunnels are dark and
curved: close one eye as you approach & open in tunnel - helps with dark
adaptation.
