I have a female friend who is taking the MSF basic rider course soon with
her husband.  I mentioned to her that over-the-ankle boots are typically
required, but that thick leather ones may interfere with here ability to
find and feel the gearshift in both directions (since she is just learning).

Any boot recommendations or other thoughts?

Thanks, Dave.

For the purposes of the MSF course, my recollection is
that it doesn't (or at least didn't) have to be actual
"motorcycle boots" - I did my BRC in a pair of over-the-
ankle leather hiking boots, which (if they're a pretty well-
broken-in pair) would probably offer a good deal more
"feel."

But on the other hand, she's going to have to learn to
feel that shifter through decent boots sometime; might as
well start out with the real thing, if she's sure she wants
to make that investment up front.

Something comfortable and over the ankle. She doesn't have to go out and buy
300 dollar moto-boots or anything like that though if she's serious about
riding she should get something that she will continue to wear after getting
her endorsement. Have her wear the things as much as possible before she
takes the course and then she'll be used to them and "feel" wont be as much
an issue.

Tell her to get a pair exactly like these:

You can feel the controls well with those (even manipulate them with
your toes).  <g>
