Hijack a plane in New Zealand and there's really not a big range
of choices where to go, and they're all far away across water --
Tasmania, Tonga, New Caledonia, or how about
"Take me to the Ross Ice Shelf!" ...?
And what did she think the Aussies would do even if the plane
could have made it that far?

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A knife-wielding woman tried to hijack a
regional domestic flight in New Zealand Friday, stabbing both pilots and
threatening to blow up the twin-propeller plane before she was subdued,
police said.
The wounded pilots were able to land the plane safety in Christchurch,
causing chaos at the popular tourist city's airport as police and
emergency crews rushed onto the tarmac to arrest the suspect, evacuate
the six passengers and search the plane for bombs.
Christchurch police Commander Dave Cliff said the 33-year-old woman,
originally from Somalia, attacked the pilots about 10 minutes into the
flight from the regional city of Blenheim, 40 miles south of the capital
of Wellington, to Christchurch, about 220 miles south of the capital.
During the ordeal, the woman demanded to be flown to Australia — a
destination that was beyond the Jetstream aircraft's range.

Things like this have happened from time to time in the U.S. Last one I
remember was a large passenger who reached in the cockpit, hit the fuel
cutoffs, and then fought vigorously with the pilots. It resulted in one
pilot screaming "get him off of me", several passengers dragging the guy out
of the cockpit and restraining him, and the airplane being only 700 feet
above the ground before the crew got the engines going again.
I believe they charged the guy with, among other things, 39 counts of
attempted murder.
I'm guessing that the airline will, at minimum, take away her frequent flier
miles ...

Not bad, but she's topped by the guy who hijacked a Southern Pacific freight
train in San Luis Obispo California a while ago and ordered the engineer to
take him to New York City.
As I recall, he surrendered after it was pointed out to him that the tracks
in San Luis Obispo only went towards (A) Los Angeles or (B) San Francisco.
