Hi, I'm looking to get into riding on the street. I used to desert race a
250cc Yamaha in the mid to late '70's. I'm now 50 years old, 6' 1" and 220
lbs. and trying to decide on a good bike to ease safely into street riding.

At first,  I will be commuting 40 miles round trip on surface streets, and
fun riding around town. Perhaps I should mention I live in Southern Calif.
That means occasional jaunts on the freeway.

One of the bikes I was considering is the Buell Blast. Anyone care to share
an opinion on the 494cc single cylinder Buell Blast?

Any comments on used bikes is also welcome.
 Thanks, Mike

I always suggest bikes that you won't grow out of quickly. Suzuki SV650
would be a great starter.

The blast is a good concept, but it just doesn't have it as a full
package. I think you would be much happier with a liquid cooled twin or
larger. Stop and go traffic is not fun on a hot day with an air cooled
bike.

Kawasaki Ninja ZX14R is a good starter bike.  :)

< snip useful background info >

Will be 50 this year and I got back into riding about 5 years ago.  I'm
5'8'' and 165lbs.

I started with an old cheap Honda Rebel 450, one year later I was on a
Nighthawk 750 and a year later I am on a F4i 600cc sportbike.

The cruiser did not agree with my back, that is why I moved to the 750, a
standard.  Moving to the sportbike was just an opportunity....

Anyway, unless you are into the whole cruiser style thing, I recommend a UJM
(Universal Jap Motorcycle) or standard.  Nighthawk 750.  Ducati Monster.
Ninja 500.  And the Suzuki SV650 is the most bang for the buck.  SV 1000s
aren't as popular, but you could consider one as you a big guy.

You could get by on a Ninja 250 for a year and then move up.  They are cheap
and will hold their value.

And don't write off the big scooters, the Silverwing or Burgman.

And take the MSF class, please.
