I am trying to get back into biking after a long absence and have been in
the market for either the Yamaha XT250 or the Kawasaki KLX250 (it's all the
bike I need) but trouble is when you mention either of these at their
respective dealers, it's like I insulted them.
Leo's in Lakeville, MN. told me that they had only sold one 250 and didn't
expect any others then practically showed me the door. The only Yamaha I
found within 100 miles had so many fees on top of its full list price that
it quickly became a $5K bike.
It's pretty discouraging, any suggestions for a prospective buyer other than
used bikes?
TIA

Wait until the winter when the dealers are hungry and get a bike ordered.
Your really a newbie, aren't you. :-)
The MC dealers have a narrow window of 3 months where all the idiots
come out of the woodwork who never had bikes before and plunk down
their cash for that crotch rocket they have been masterbating to for the
last decade. If the dealers can't move a lot of powerful expensive bikes
right now then they are gonna go out of business.
I can't stand going into the dealerships during this time. Seriously,
all of us regular riders who are just in there to buy a couple quarts
of oil or some such get treated like dogshit right now. Just don't
take it personally.
Once the weather turns nasty the crowds disappear and things get
back to normal. By the time November rolls around, a quarter of
the bikes that got sold are back in, due to repossessions or some
such, and the dealers will practically make love to you if you walk
in to buy a bike.

Y'mean like thinking you've been treated like dogshit? :)
Seriously, the combination of springtime and gasoline prices have led to
not being able to serve everybody quickly. <shrug>

All motorcycle dealers are desparate to sell their inventories of larger
bikes now. Mike, at Honda of Hollywood, says he can't get enough small
bikes, is mostly sold out of them, and guys with 600cc sportbikes are
wanting to trade their bikes in for 250s or scooters.
Bikes that get 80 to over 100 mpg.
So? No wonder the attitude.

Four suggestions:
a)Shop over the Winter.
b)You can get good prices on bikes 1-2 years old with 0 miles because the
dealers are afraid of being stuck with them. By good prices I mean $1000
off on a $5000 bike, if you're really lucky.
c)Shop using eBay motors, dealers only.
d)Are you _sure_ you want a 250? That is barely big enough to pick up your
mail from your mailbox ...
