Hi all,

I'm here in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and thinking of buying a used
bike of 750 cc or more. There are a couple of issues that I thought
I'd discuss. One, I'm only about 1.6 m tall. Two, I'm over 40. Three,
the biggest bike I've ridden in life thus far is a 175 cc Zundapp back
home in India when I was half my age.

Question - Assuming that it'd be a Yes to my being possibly too
optimistic in trying to make a jump from 175 to a biggie, given my age
and lack of height, what would you advice to be probably the best bike
to buy? I see myself putting the bike to use for nothing more than
commuting to and from work; I'm not a racetrack guy by a long shot and
with wife and kids, I can't see it being put to use for touring
either.

All counsel would be gratefully acknowledged. I can't afford BMWs and
Ducatis, so Japanese options would be more preferred.

Thanks in advance,

Ramapriya

PS: I'd posted here once earlier a couple of months ago when I was
mulling the idea of buying a used Blackbird; didn't do so, btw.

What do you plan to do with it?  If you just want to commute in city
traffic, you are wasting money buying such a big bike especially given
you might have trouble controlling it when coming to stops.

OTOH, if you plan to take to the dunes then I'd suggest a KTM 990 of
maybe a BMW R1200GS Adventure...and some platform soles.

Yep I'm looking for a bike that I won't find a pain to handle at
traffic lights. The thing about Dubai is that there's almost a culture
here that motorcyclists are regarded not as fellow road-users but as
flies almost, if you know what I mean. The only chance of one being
respected somewhat is if the bike is reasonably big. Almost the only
bike users here are pizza-delivery persons on their 150 cc bikes and
hit-and-run accidents involving them are worryingly rife.

Aside of not many used BMWs or KTMs on offer here, I don't see myself
going up and down dunes at all. I'm very a street person.

Oh and there's one little plus if I can call it that - nearly all
speed radars here trace you from ahead, and motorcycles here only have
rear number plates, so they can never be penalized for speeding ;))

This bodes ill. How about a sidecar to make yourself more visible?

Or a sign on your back saying,
"I'm an Imam and my family are all attorneys"
