Motorcyclists have done it to themselves and the blame falls equally
on the young and old riders or 600SS and Harley Davidson riders. But
is that really true? No I think a stock 600SS screaming down our main
cross streets and from stoplight make as much intake noise as it does
the back end. This is true ever in newer sports cars with relatively
high peak RPM. The intake velocity can well exceed 400mph on such
machines and as in fighter jets we all know that the higher the gas
velocity the louder the airplane will be. But the exhaust speeds in an
F-15 are always supersonic which is what makes it much louder than a
Boeing 737 high bypass fan jet with most the noise coming from the low
velocity fan by a ratio of about 6.5:1. On the F-15's low bypass 0.2
to 1 ratio and on some engines there are two fan stages or a high
velocity/noise level even without the afterburner lite up.

I digress back to motorcycles exhaust noise (referenced March Cycle
world article by Mark Hoyer) law for all motorcycles produced after
2012 of I believe to be a maximum of 88db of sound pressure
level. What's really behind all this IMO is the straight piped Harley
Davidson that is a) so slow that the noise lasts much longer.b) Is an
obnoxious fire cracker type pop pop sound that will wake the dead when
the bars close at 2AM CA time as all the Harley posers drag race from
light to light on their way home, if they even make it in their state
of drunkenness.

Here in Arizona we have a suburb called Cave Creek to the north of
town that just happens to be the home of one Sonny Barger who ones a
Harley shop and no-doubt more than one bar in that town. Well you know
what the town counsel did two years ago? The made their local police
strictly enforce the 88DB sound pressure law and along with the excess
noise they likely got a bunch of real and wannabee Hells Angles
arrested for both DUI AND loud pipes!

Why pick on Harley's when 16-25 year old squids on 600SS's are out
there doing the same thing with their loud pipes & intake snarl. Well
we've all been rebellious kids but the 40+ HA wannabees should know
better not to even mention that the little 600s sound knarlly as all
hell where as as the straight piped Harley's just sound like shit -:)

I don't really care if the noise comes from a Harley or a hypersport
bike or a ricer with a fat pipe on his Acura RSX, I am ready for the
police to stringently and uniformly clamp down on all of them, youg or
old, fast or slow.

Of course, here in Fairtax County, Va, if you are going to get a noise
summons, it's going to come from a cop in a cruiser, because the motor
officers have - afaik - all illegally drilled out the baffles in the
mufflers on their Hogcopsickles so that they are loud and annoying as
all hell, theirowndamnselves.

Anyway, it has as much or more to do with emissions as it does
noise...even though motorcycles as a portion of the population of
polluting contributors probably rank some where between filth of chain
saws and weed whackers, but nowhere near the environmental menace of
lawn mowers.

Just say no to lawn mowing!  I say we hold a ride-in to the hot dog
stand where we can picket this nasty task while enjoying the goodness
of a plump, toasted pig in a blanket.

On a more vexing problem, my wife tells me that there are certain
parts of Cali near the coast that prohibit motorcycling.  WTF? Here I
thought I was going to visit the bastion of tolerance and enlightened
thought and I'll be treated like a dirt biker in a farmer's field...ON
PUBLIC ROADS!

No it's strictly noise Saddle, Motorcycles aren't bad smoggers anymore
(no two smokes over 50cc in USA) and MC's don't constitute enough of
the on road vehicles to be a CA. problem. Likely of any given day in
AZ or CA there is more pollution from two stroke weed eaters and
blowers + model Airplanes than from MC's

That would be the 17 mile drive near Monterrey but they now allow
motorcycles but the drive requires that each vehicle pay a charge to
drive the course. It's where all the rich folks live near the Pebble
Beach Golf course overlooking the cliffs south of Monterrey but North
of Big Sir CA.. I believe  straight piped Hayley's are still not
allowed by demand of the owners.
