I have a scooter, but don't know much about maintenance, other than
oil changes. I'd like to learn things like clutch adjustment, changing
belts, etc. Are there classes that are given for these things, like at
dealerships or colleges? I live in the Detroit area.

Some schools that teach motorcycle riding offer such courses. They do
in my area, at least.
Other than that, it's best to buy a service manual and just start
getting your hands dirty, trying things. You'll learn a lot - even
from mistakes.

You might also check with the local vocational school or community
college; many offer small-engine or automotive maintenance classes
that will teach you the basics. You can learn the innards of either
a lawn-mower engine or a big V-8, and then it's surprising how well the
basics will then transfer to just about anything that drinks gasoline.
(With the one caveat that there IS somewhat of a gap between those
engines what come from Two-Stroke-Land, these days pretty much
limited to leaf blowers and the like as far as new stuff is concerned,
and those which are from Four-Stroke-Land.)

Well, Joyce, on the off chance that you're a millionaire and have lots of
free time to pursue recreational interests, there is a motorcycle
maintenance school in Orlando (and probably similar ones around the country)
...
http://www.uti.edu/
You could learn to do it all, if you wanted.
I happen to know of the place because my dad lives in Orlando, and I've
passed it a time or two.

Maybe there is a local scooter club around that might be a help for you.
