OK,  I haven't had a close one since the first couple of months I
started back riding... got too much to lose :)- But this morning, it
could have been the real thing if I wasn't more alert.

Riding to work - divided hiway; 2 lanes either side; I'm in the left
lane in a 25mph zone with traffic all around me,

This guy in a dark blue late model Ford with an antenna on the back,
checks his left mirror, puts on his signal, and comes over into my
space.

I was just enough behind his front door to realize that he probably
didn't see me when he looked into the mirror, so I laid back. Still, I
wanted him to know that his lane change was sloppy, so as he made his
lane change, I laid on the horn big-time. When he got in front of me,
I started flashing my brights while still laying on the horn, hoping
that next time, he'd be more careful. He never noticed me.

I caught up with him a mile or so later and just as I suspected, he
was a cop in full uniform in an unmarked vehicle and one I think I
know well enough to nod hello when I see him around City Hall.

Man, if those guys aren't looking out for others, nobody is - and, of
course, we know nobody is. His lane change was improper because in my
state, you must do a head check in addition to a mirror check when
changing lanes. I know because I got ticketed for it years back.

In the end, I think it's the one you don't see who'll get ya, which is
why I try to "see" everybody even if I know they don't see me. I
mentally kick my own axx if I visually miss a vehicle or  pedestrian
as I'm riding, no matter how little of threat they pose.

Maybe he would have heard a set of air horns. I'm getting
a pair for my bike.

Agreed! I've invest in a set myself, but I'm not sure how much longer
I'm going to hold on to this bike.

Magnum Blasters are a good alternative.  At 138 dB, they're as loud as
air horns.  They are plenty loud enough to get the desirable and
immediate lurch-back-to-whence-they-came out of most cagers.  They fit
on most bikes.

Magnum Blaster High-Note Horn Garrand Part No. 3-0114 (138 dB)
Magnum Blaster Low-Note Horn Garrand Part No. 3-0115 (138 dB)

About 15 bucks each, available at many auto parts stores - also online.
You want one of each to get that "Buick" sound.
