I just swung by Harbor Freight for the base of my new camping cargo
trailer/travelling kennel for the pup.  The choice was to get the 40x49
inch trailer with 8" wheels for the lighter, more flexible suspension.
My thought is to add a full box onto it measuring 30" high and creating
a 2'x3' padded kennel area for Sammy to come with me everywhere.  I've
given up on the idea of affixing a dog crate to the rear seat area of
the BMW, but not on taking him with me.

The exterior will utilize FRP board used in bathrooms because it's
waterproof and durable.  I'll use 1x3 boards on their side to frame the
walls and insulate with pink extruded foam for warmth.  The interior
will get lauan backing with indoor/outdoor carpet lining glued in.
There'll be more mods like an electric cooler, locking gas cans and
maybe a fan in Sammy's area for air movement when it gets warmer out.
I'm now looking for a locking pet door for the side and maybe a window
for the back.

It didn't hurt the wallet that I had a 20% off coupon either.  ;^)

If you can find 12" wheels with the same bolt pattern, swap them out.  You will
greatly decrease your bearing speed.  At highway speed, an 8" wheel is
screaming.  Most disabled boat trailers you see on the side of the road have one
8" wheel and one naked axle with a failed bearing.

I pulled a Travlite motorcycle camper for years with 8" wheels and
never had an issue. *shrug*  Grease the bearings regularly with good
grease.  I could have spent $20 more and got the 12" wheeled trailer,
but the suspension was very much stiffer.  Watching a trailer bounce in
your mirrors with your pet in it is not what I'm wanting.

I knew someone would bring this exact topic up.  <grin>  I'm not
planning on freeway speeds.  Backroads for vacations are much more
conducive to peace of mind and relaxation.  I'll also be stopping every
couple hundred miles for "walkies".  hehe

What I'm saying is swap your 8" wheels for 12" on the same trailer with the
suspension you want - if the bolt circles are the same.

I have 14" Chevy Cavalier wheels, bearings, and axles on my trailer but I don't
haul dogs in it, just clothes and camping gear.

I doubt his dog weighs as much as a boat.
