Crap

 

Last week my son (25) passed his safety course and on Monday got his
learner's permit. (Here you still have to pass a road test after the course
to get a full licence)
One of the guys at work was selling a 2005 XL883 and was also looking for a
50 watt tube amp which I happened to have for sale.
We struck a deal and I took posession of the Sporty yesterday afternoon.
I registered it under my name but my son was riding it to learn on with a
view to him either buying it from me or me keeping it to turn into a hot
rod.

I've never seen him as happy as he was riding that bike.

24 hours later he was riding along Corydon Ave which is a popular retaurant
and bar street here when someone pulled out of a parking spot right in
front of him. He didn't even have time to react.
Fortunately he had a good jacket on and a brand new well fitted helmet
which he came and got about 2 hours earlier.
He's a bit banged up but nothing broken except his spirit a bit.
He's more angry than anything though and can't wait to get back on the
bike.
Unfortunately there are a few broken bits and pieces to replace and we'll
have to wait for the insurance company to release the bike after the long
weekend. Double firtunately I'll be able to scare up the parts myself and
the service dept will most likely get him back on the road fairly quickly.

Whuff! *THAT* certainly didn't take long!

I'm very glad he's okay, and with any luck this will help him
internalise the warnings I'm sure he's been hearing about ATGATT and
the fact that all cage drivers must be treated as if they are *trying*
to get you.

And, BTW; *you* deserve kudos for being rightfully pissed off yet
reacting in a sensible manner.

It's tough not to go ballistic when one of your own has been put in
danger through another's carelessness.

No, it was very quick and exactly what I was afraid of too.
Life has a way of dangling carrots to him and them yanking them away once
he gets a taste.
He was pointing out guys with less than good equipment on the way home
saying they were idiots so I think the gear argument has hit home hard.

The other people involved took responsibility and appeared to be genuinely
concerned for him so it made it difficult to be angy even though I wanted
to be.
