I was calling on a customer near a motorcycle shop on the other side
of town, so I decided to drop in. I'm not looking to replace the old
bike yet, but I still like to keep up with what's new just in case.

There were plenty of cruisers and sport bikes, but almost nothing in
naked bikes or sport touring types. The salesman said most of their
sales were in the first two categories, the others were niche sales.
The only bike there I was interested in seeing was the new Concours.
He was going on about how great it was, and told me it got 40-50 mpg!
I told him I didn't think so because my 750 gets 40-50 mpg (60 riding
like granny), but he insisted it would.

With gas prices up, I know dealers are trying to capitalize on gas
mileage to boost sales, but I wonder how many dealers are spinning
fairy tales like this to unsuspecting buyers? Does anybody have a
new Concours that gets 50mpg?

Bikes are really sensitive to how they are ridden, but a quick search
over at the Concours Owners Group finds many averages of 40~45 MPG.
Same area I get with my Concours10. Some guys are getting lower, some a
bit higher, but then so do I, depending on how I ride it through the
tank. I've gotten a high of 53 MPG (all highway across Ohio) and a low
of 36 (almost the whole tank really twisting on the throttle) Again,
that with a C10, not a C14.

The new Concours 14 is lucky to get 32 MPG.

And you can say this having personally ridden how many of them?
Some people on the Concours Owners Group forum report considerably
better than that. I suspect they are taking it *real* easy.

My FJR gets in the mid to high 30s when ridden as God intended,
but I have gotten as high as 46 mpg traveling at a steady ~70
mph. It really does depend very highly on how you ride and
whether its a long trip or around town stop-and-go riding.

My old Concours would get about 40 mpg seemingly no matter how
I rode it, but it got significantly better on long drones on
I-90 across South Dakota.
