There's plenty of larger bikes out there that get great gas mileage if
ridden like they're passenger cars. If I keep my wrist out of the
throttle, I can get 50mpg on my GS, but normally average ~45ish because
it's much more fun that way. The GL1800 got a high of 51 with a normal
tank getting 44-46 and I was not gentle with it. The Trophy was the
last bike I had that got under 40 in normal driving @ 38 mpg average
for nearly 30k miles. Self control is the key. <g> I can make any
bike get poor mileage with very little effort. ;)

Steve is just being difficult or obtuse. Just because he can't do it,
doesn't mean it can't be done.

Too many years ago Olds (IIRC) put a really tall rear gear in a 455 inch
"98" sedan and got over 50 mpg highway.

Therein lies a problem with tall gearing.
The motor must have enough power to pull it.
You can only get away with that in engines with a lot of torque.

It works just like lap times. A dude starts his watch when his buddy comes
by. When he comes by again he stops the watch, reads the time, then restarts
it. He does this for 5 laps. The first time is 1:35. The next four are
1:29s and one is 1:25. So, he and his rider brag that they turn 1:25 laps,
right? (I've seen it alot).

Similarly, a dude gets a good pump and fills his tank to the brim. Next time
he gets one with a valve like a trigger and, not wanting to get gas all over
his tank, quits an inch from full. Guess which mileage he reports.

Human nature.

Any big bike will do 50mpg if you ride it slowly enough.
