My 1971 H1 used surface gap plugs like you describe. It had a high
voltage CDI with one coil and a distributor. My 1974 H2 has a CDI
with three coils and uses regular style plugs. Neither one has ever
had a problem with fouled plugs. They also never got particularly
good mileage. My 1977 KZ 1000 averages 35 to 40 mpg while my 1981 GPZ
550 averages 50 to 55 mpg.
