... so, instead of ruminating on how much better things are since
9/11, I sat down in front of the TV but couldn't get involved in any
of the bathos which passes for Sunday morning news. I did notice that
I was receiving uncharacteristically good signals from most stations
and decided to rescan for new digital offerings such as they are for
the first time since the digital conversion (DC). In my area this
involves turning the aerial to each of the four quadrants of the
compass in turn, letting the digital converter box do its thing, and
noting which channels it detects. Since this process blows away
presets, I have to discover from Wikipedia what frequencies the new
virtual channels actually use, send the antenna back around to the
appropriate part of the sky, manually insert the actual RF channel,
and hope the box still sees a signal on the virtual channel, which I
can then add to the presets. It was a clear, dry day much like ten
years ago. The sun was a little active, and it was early morning on a
weekend without much electrical noise in the neighborhood. The only
new channels to be found, however, were from across the lake and about
forty miles inland. It's anyones guess how these will hold up on
any other day.
