The mysterious jangling noise, that is. It sounds like a bunch
of car keys being shaken, a sort of loose metal tinkling:
(1) It gets worse as the motor warms up
(2) It gets worse when there's a load on the motor,
as in accelerating
(3) It gets worse at higher rpm's
(4) [and here's the real poser] it gets worse if I turn off the lights!
(The light switch has an "OFF" pos'n)
I can be riding along, no jangling. With everything else staying
constant, I turn off the lights ---> jangle.
WTFIGO? My mechanic visitor says pull the generator and check it out.
Stay tuned, SQ

Might not all be from the same thing.
Loose valve clearences could sound like keys being shaken.
Maybe a little detonation which would increase under load.
Shutting the lights off would make the voltage regulator work harder.
Fluttering contacts?

Just an opinion and worth every penny, but it sounds like he's on the
right track. I don't recall how much garage space you have (if you
have any that is) BUT I'd be getting a shop manual post haste...it's
an old enough design that all but the most incompetant can work on it.

I will...remember I'm pulling for you, we're all in this
together. ;^)

So is this the point in the technical discussion
where we hurl insults at each other ?
