Yesterday, don't know why (probably don't ride enough), I got left and right
confused and hit the starter motor when I meant to cancel the turn signal.
Fortunately, engine was at idle and I was stopped.
This is my first time doing this in 10,000+ miles.
Anyway, all I heard was kind of a whirring noise.
Subsequently, everything seems fine with the bike.
Dumb question: do starter motors contain some feature that prevents the
teeth from engaging with a running engine? I got that impression ...

Thanks.

Hah, if only it were so easy. Accidentally pressing the starter button
while
the engine is running will irretrievably damage the starter clutch, if
you're
lucky, it may even destroy the engine! The motor companies did this on
purpose,
so that a single error by the user will require a costly repair.
Makes sense, doesn't it? :-)

It will, however, temporarily black out your headlight, or hadn't you
noticed? Slightly depressing the starter switch is how I signal semis
it's OK to cut in front of me.

I don't own a single bike that has the headlight wired into the ignition
as a permanent fixture. Not sure I ever have done, actually.
