From experience, this is a list of absolute essentials needed
before starting to wrench on a bike:
* rags. lots of rags, the softer the better. The best I've found
are baby clothes, from a thrift store.
* automotive hand cleaner, available at hardware stores and automotive
supplies. I find the gritty kind too harsh when working in cold weather.
* some sheets of cardboard or newspapers, to catch oil
* a Glad bag for garbage such as oil-stained cardboard or newspaper
* a box of Baggies or sandwich bags. These are for storing bolts
and other small parts.
* a pencil and some post-it notes, for identifying the bolts
and small parts.
* a can of Liquid Wrench
* NEW ITEM * a digital camera, to record how things look before
disassembling them.
* a supply of electrical tie-wraps (the locking, use-once kind)
* electrician's black tape
Only after collecting the above you can start to think about
socket sets, sledge hammers and impact drivers.
Anyone have any favorite essentials to add?

A good bike lift and tie-down straps.

I have a bag of assorted cotterpins that come in useful. Agent Orange is
always welcome, but maybe not essential. Ditto on the digital camera
thing.

It's always handy when you need to defoliate your bike.

Good LED light (headlamp is especially good)
Couple of strong magnets (Sonicare toothbrush head) for retrieving
stuff.
Couple pairs of forceps and some dental picks.
Shop and parts manuals.
