With the advent of four-to-five dollar petrol, many novices are taking to
the roads.  Many of these new riders are foregoing basic training.  I've
seen several riders this season whom I am ready to write off as dead men
riding.  Poor gear and aggressive riding are a killer combo.  Someone was
killed this weekend here in the North Sound; I don't know the details,
but I'm not surprised.  I predict a sharp rise in motorcycle fatalities
this season, nationwide.

One of the saddest sights I've seen so far this spring, though, is quite
different.  A couple riding two scooters, with their offspring as
passengers.  The were riding as you would expect a couple with their
children to ride, i.e. slowly and attentively.  However, it was obvious
they lacked some of the fundamentals about starting and stopping.  Most
glaring was the negligent placement of the youngest offspring on the seat
of the father's scooter, in front of the operator.  This man had no idea
of the danger into which he was placing his three year old daughter.

In hindsight, I wish I would have been proactive in voicing my concern to
the couple at a traffic stop, but a convenient opportunity did not arise
and I did not put forth an effort to create an opportunity.  I hope they
learn before something terrible happens.  As you were.

You missed your opportunity to do a good deed. Try harder next time. If the
experienced folks won't take the time to help out the newbies, who else
will?

My husband has been riding motorcycles practically since birth.  We have
been married 7 years now.  I've always rode on the back of his.
Recently, he bought me a Derbi scooter (only 49 c.c.). I'm  riding this
as my 1st one.  When I feel confident on this, I will get a big bike or
scooter.  It is very scarey riding on the roads with cars and trucks
but I'm loving it and can't wait till I get my bigger bike.  My husband
has, is and will always tell me "drive defensively".  Look everywhere
all the time.  Motorcycle riding is dangerous but VERY FUN and wouldn't
give it up for anything.  Our dog rides everywhere with us too.
"Safety" is the key word!
