These pavement markings have appeared all over town on arterial
streets apparently to the tune of about $330 thousand.  I thought some
charity had been permitted to stencil their annual bicycle ride/walk
routes, and I was impressed that they were going to tie up so much
city traffic on a given day.

"County officials said the bike lanes are a critical step in
establishing an extensive bicycle trail system in Sheboygan that will
link cyclists to schools, churches, offices, parks and shopping via
on- and off-road routes."

"No parking will be eliminated in Sheboygan as a result of the bike
lanes, which will be located between driving and parking lanes."

Part of Federally Funded Program." _Sheboygan Press_ 25 May 2011.

I guess this means that us adults should ride in the street instead of
on sidewalks.  Perhaps, now, doing so, us older citizens have some
comeback in case we get run over except when we venture onto streets
that haven't yet been stenciled.  I dunno; the story doesn't say.  Not
having subscribed to any bicyclists' rights organizations, I really
don't know what to think.  I can just imagine what ABATE would have to
say about requiring motorcyclists to use (or not) the so-called
bicycle "lanes."

I like bike lanes and ride in the streets with or without them,
as do most adult cyclists, locally at least. Not the worst
idea in the world, IMHO.

Gosh, now that I think about it, there are a lot of classes of
vehicles.

Generally, you don't want to mix motorcycles and bicycles.  Speed
differences, weight differences.

But, you also don't want to mix motorcycles and cars.

And you don't want to mix semis and cars.

And you don't want to mix any of those and pedestrians.

I honestly can't decide if it is better or worse for motorcycles to
use bicycle lanes.

Better, 'cause it's hard to go fast on the sidewalk.

But sidewalks sometimes make great shortcuts.  NTTATWWT.
