I have a friend who is getting into motorcycling, and we had some debate
about whether to take the MSF course.  He recently purchased a 500cc
cruiser.

He'd like to study and practice on his own and then take the Michigan
practical test.  In fact, he is doing that now.

My argument to him was that there are safety issues with being self-taught,
and the MSF course is the better way to go.

Does anyone have anything credible they'd like to add to the discussion?  In
practice, I'll point the friend to the discussion thread.

My opinion is that it is unwise to be self-taught.  I'm not sure that a
person really can teach themselves very well.

Opinions?

You could of course just Google this or the 300 similar threads on
this topic over the past year or so for the info you seek.

Or your friend (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) could just drop into the
group and chat about his choices himself.

You have said your piece.  It is now probably time that you STFU  !!
Seriously.  Unless he is a "special" friend.  ;-)

I'm still amazed that there's still places that allow people on
motorbikes without formal training.

How does he plan to teach himself basic things like emergency braking or
countersteering?
