I've been poking around the Net, looking at scoots a lot since I sold
my FXDL and have seen a new pair of factory customs, the Honda Fury
and Yamaha Raider. At first glance I kinda like these bikes but can't
decide if they're just a weak attempt to snag sales from weekend
riders, or if they're good enough bikes to stand on their own.

A little from column A and a little from column B.
Because these bikes are from major manufacturers equipped with modern
CAD and CAM systems, and not some idiot with an angle grinder, a
multi-step drill bit and a welder, they're probably some of the best
functioning "custom cruisers" on the market.
However, they're still not going to have great handling or comfort
compared to a "normal" bike. And none of their engineering will
mean squat to most of the target market who would probably prefer
some cobbled-together abortion, which is what most of the custom
market seems to consist of these days.
IMHO.
