I lost a key for my Suzuki, and have only 1 left. I took it to various
big-box and hardware stores, and none of them could make a working copy.
The key certainly doesn't look exotic in any way (1996 Bandit 600),
but I guess Suzuki uses different blanks than car keys do, just to make
life hard.
So how do I get a key made for this thing?

The Automotive key kits the hardware stores use do not include MC blanks -
you'll have to go to MC dealer to get one made. The key kit companies do
make kits fo rmotorcycles but not many dealers carry them.
I had to get a key made for our little Kawa last year, local dealer
apologised that he had to charge me $12 for the (Kawa) blank and $3 or so to
cut it. Said he was thinking about getting the aftermarket kit - but it was
$600 and he doesn't sell that many keys.

As someone mentioned, you can buy the blanks from Suzuki. Once you have
them, any locksmith can cut them. I'd avoid big box and hardware
stores. While they may guarantee the cutting (that is, if they screw it
up they'll cut another free), they won't reimburse you for the
blank--which ain't cheap. Same situation at most locksmiths, but
they're *much* less likely to screw up.
When I found myself in your situation, I got referred to a locksmith who
specializes in motorcycle keying:
Ashland Lock & Security Solutions
2510 N. Ashland, Chicago
They had both blanks for recent bike models, and expertise cutting them.
Obviously only helpful if you're near Chicago, but at least such
places *are* available.

Hasn't it got a number on it? If so (and they usually have), a call to a
Suzi main dealer will see a new key winging its way to your abode.
