I have been looking to pick up a Yamaha Venture tour pack to retrofit
to my Road King. Still fresh in my memory is the bloody exchange that
took place after I announced why I wanted to do that so I am not going
there again. The point of this post is patience pays big dividends
when shopping on Ebay.
Here's the deal. I bought a good trunk bottom, back rest and speaker
assembly from a buddy of mine in Calgary. Missing was a lid, one hinge
and all of the locking hardware. I figured I could buy the hardware
new if I had too but I wanted to find a good used lid.
So I am watching ebay for a lid. Here is a link to one that sold for a
ridiculous price just recently:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item 0334159668
$127.00 plus freight for a drilled and swirled trunk lid.
OK maybe that is not a bad price. New they are $400 Canadian. That one
would have been $200 landed in Calgary in Canuck bucks.
So not seeing good value I decide to pass on the bidding for that one.
I figured for $50 plus freight it would be worth it.
A couple of weeks ago I see this package on Ebay:

I throw a bid of $153 and change at it and low and behold no one else
is interested and I get it for the starting price of $100. It arrived
today and it is in near perfect condition. The lid has a few very
light scratches which might even buff out but will certainly disappear
with a very light sanding. The rest of it is in very good condition
and the red and silver are a very close match to the colours of my
Road King. For the little bit I plan on using it, I might not have to
get it painted.
So for about $200 landed I got the lid, hinge, hinge cover and locking
hardware I was looking for and now have a trunk bottom to flog on
Ebay.
This just made my day. :-)

To be fair when there is almost 10 inches of snow on the ground and
temperatures forecast to be minus 30 and below this weekend, patience
as it is applied to riding is not too much of a challenge.

Great! I gotta tell ya, I did the whole removable trunk gig on my EGC
when I got it, because I wanted to look cool with it off. I took it
off all of twice this past season.
I got used to having all the storage and the look grew on me. I never
take it off anymore except to clean underneath it.
