My shop manual says in a few places (the gearshift joint, for example; or to
lubricate the non-thread portion of the front axle) to grease things.

In some cases (the swingarm bearings, for example), they cite special
grease. But in a lot of cases they don't.

When no special type of grease is specified, what does one use?

Anything one shouldn't use?

For the gearshift joint, it is clearly under very minor pressure (a foot or
toe presses it), and I just used some white general-purpose grease. I don't
think I can go wrong there because of the undemanding application.

But what should I use in general when a specific type is not called out?

Thanks.

Lithium-based axle/wheel-bearing grease. Find it at a boat trailer
store.

Why don't you ask all your questions in one thread?

There can be substantial disagreement and discussion. If I were to ask 5
different questions in one thread, 1 or more might get overlooked. Posting
separately "spreads it out" a little.

For all I know, the right oil or grease to use could be a controversial
topic ...

It probably will be controversial. That's a good sign that there's no
clear basis for the decision so it really doesn't matter. Hence the
manual doesn't elaborate.

I appreciate that all questions aren't asked in the same thread. I find them
interesting and am learning quite a bit from the replies. From my
standpoint, that's what newsgroups are for, sharing information.
Of course some think they're for putting down others, but I always thought
that said more about that poster than the original one. Thanks for starting
creative exchange David.
