I have a $300 helmet and $100 gloves. I live in a small town.

Quite routinely now, I just set the helmet and gloves on the seat or on the
passenger backrest and go about my business (banking, shopping, etc.).

What is the probability my stuff (helmet, gloves) will eventually get
stolen?

Never happens? Does happen?

Just curious ... does helmet theft ever occur?

Eventually? Practically 100%.

Does happen.

Yup, and sometimes the asshole who wants the helmet will actually cut the
helmet's strap by which it is locked to the bike, thereby making the helmet
completely useless to him, but depriving you of it as well.

I've also heard of riders coming back to their bike to find that someone has
taken a leak in their locked helmet; presumably someone who would have
stolen it had it not been locked up.

When I can, I take my hat with me. When I can't, I lock it to the bike,
which I park in an area with heavy foot traffic which hopefully discourages
vandals, thieves, and those with overactive kidneys.

I figured so. Just had to be sure.

I guess there is good news and bad news there.

The good news is that I believe in nearly every case urine is sterile and
there should be no risk of disease.

The bad news is obvious ...

It soaks into the helmet liner so you can't drink it?

No, the bad news is that somebody peed in your helmet!

I only had one such experience ... a cat peed in my shoe and I put it on
without knowing in advance. I can't imagine that with a helmet. Eucch!
