I have this one:

http://www.hjchelmets.com/prdc_fs3.htm

I had to choose between the extra protection provided by the full face
helmet and the better visibility of the open face helmet.  I wore a full
face helmet my first year of riding, then, when nothing tragic happened,
tried the open face.

The way I see it, I can better avoid an accident with more visibility.

Yup.  There's only so many materials than can be used.  The outer shell can
be any material, but the important stuff is the foam between the head and
the shell.  I've yet to hear of any new super-foam that expensive helmets
use.

As the other dude said, you are paying for fancy paint in the end.

If you want really cool designs, pay some talented kid a few bucks to paint
your helmet, then throw on some clear coat.  It'll look just as cool, if not
cooler, and nobody else will have one.

It's your face and your call, of course, but doing a face-plant at 60
MPH in your open-faced hat is *seriously* contra-indicated.

Me, I've wiped out two full-face helmets over the years, and in both
cases the hats sustained damage that would have either killed me or
disfigured me for life had I been wearing an open-faced design.

The very minimum I'll use is a good quality motocross-style helmet
with a sturdy chin-bar, and I only use that in really hot weather for
around-town use.

CS, although I've very often worn a half-helmet, I have to agree with
Twibil.

I recently got roughed up on StromTrooper for asking whether a V-Strom was
aerodynamically compatible with a half-helmet.

Here is the thread:

I've actually gone back to wearing a full-face helmet most of the time.

Twibil and Shagnasty are, regrettably, probably right ...

It's almost funny.  Bang on a door and some (most?) dudes will open it and
stick their face out to be hit.  Ditto tap on a window. Many (most?) dudes
will roll it down and stick their face out.  Apparently ditto for bikes.  If
many dudes crash they too lead with their face.  Wierd.

SWMBO messed up a face shield once too.  She lost the back tire on oil at
about 100 comeing off the banking into the infield at Rockingham.  Hit the
left rear of her head so hard it broke the f'glass.  Then she levered the
bike back up with a knee but that was instinct - she was really unconscious
and crashed again. Thats whe she scarred up the face shield. Other than that
neither of us have ever done so.  We wear full face when riding in rain.

My attitude is that once I am *off* the motorcycle, I typically have
little to no control of my trajectory, speed, landing point, body
position, or of precisely where I will end up.  The time to plan for
such an uncontrollable event is *before* I take flight.  Therefore,
most of the time I wear a full face helmet.

For me, choosing to wear a helf helmet when it is brutally hot is
simply a calculated decision to accept even more risk than the normal
risk of riding a motorcycle on the street.  Yes, I make as many
mitigating choices as I can - increase already conservative following
distances; reduce speed where practical; cover brakes and clutch in
intersections where scanning would normally contraindicate the need to
do so, using the horn rather more proactively than usual, etc.
Still, it makes me nervous and I feel substantially more vulnerable.

I'm happy to wear my full face when the temperature and humidity
permit doing so to be comfortable enough to continue riding the bike
to and from work.

Ymmv, imho, etc, etc.
