Like seat belt laws, I am against helmet laws as another invasion of our
civil rights.
Although, I would still wear a DOT helmet when I ride anyway, law or no law.
In two crashes I've had, my helmet has made a big difference. Also, I've had
two friends crash within the last 3 years. The most recent being a deer
collision in Cambria, two weeks ago.
Both riders helmets suffered significant damage but they were okay
brain-wise and facially.

I've been fortunate with motorcycle mishaps---none of have been serious
enough that a helmet made a difference. However, I've had a couple of
killer crashes on bicycles, and in both cases I'm alive because of a
helmet (split both of them on impact with cars or the pavement). In
both cases, I walked away (although bleeding like hell) without serious
damage.

I think it's our nature as motorcyclists to eshew legislative mandates
on helmets, but when and if we ride without one, we shouldn't fool
ourselves that it's not less safe. It has been my experience that some
motorcyclists unfortunately prefer image (form) over function when it
comes to helmets.

Is it compulsory to have your headlight on as well?

No. But it's mandatory for the manufacturer to build the motorcycle with the
the headlight always on. I installed a euorpean on off switch on my BMW but
I never use it.

I never ride the Brits with the headlights on, unless it's dark. I don't
trust the lucas charging systems to charge sufficently with the head and
tail light on during the day.

The helmet laws wern't written for you.  They were written for the idiots
that
WOULD NOT wear a helmet if it wasn't mandated.

If you could guarentee to me that every motorcyclist injured in a crash
who wasn't wearing a helmet did not receive emergency room medical care
in the hospital unless they were covered by insurance, I would have no
problem with repealing those laws.  Unfortunately we already have too
many motorcyclists WITH helmets who do NOT have medical insurance
who are stealing the money out of my pockets, through both taxes and
higher health costs for me and my family, when they are carried off to
the emergency room after a crash.
