Hi, I bought a 95 ZX7R last week. The bike was riding good when i
bought it then the day after i got it i noticed there wasnt oil and it
wasnt starting. So i bought 10-W40 auto fully synthetic oil and put it
in. It then started and ran for about 2 days. Then it didnt want to
turn over and i wound up draining the battery trying to start it. I
bought a tender and fully charged the battery, I still cant get it to
turn over. Could the oil be the problem? If i didnt put the right oil
in can it have messed something up? I try starting with the choke and
it still wont work. I dont know what else to check it sounds like it
isnt getting any gas but the tank is full. Please help me, thanks.

You probably need to find a local shop who can sell you the
right oil and maybe give the bike a quick check up.

If it was running fine when you turned the key off, then
it probably didn't break while it was sitting there parked.

Most likely you've got a "prime" position on the gas
petcock to feed gasoline to the engine. If you had it
on "run" instead of "prime", then it wouldn't start.

Too much oil is almost as bad as not enough. You really
need some good local advice. Was it leaking oil ?

I think you probably qualify as the first newby/helpme
post of the riding season.

Congratulations.

By that I think you mean you push the starter button but it won't crank.

"Work" in this case is an overloaded operator. Do you mean it won't turn
over or it will turn over but not catch?

What does that sound like?

First, connect the battery to a low-amperage (1 or 2A) battery charger.

Second, confirm that the engine run/stop switch is in the Run positon.

Then confirm that there is actually gas getting to the cylinders.
Unscrew a spark plug and see if it's wet. If it's wet then you have fuel
... and fouled plugs. You'll have to clean them off and put them back
in.

Then confirm that the sparkies are sparking. Unscrew one and connect it
to its cable. Clamp it to a convenient piece of metal engine or chassis,
preferably away from the open cylinder hole, and start the starter. (No,
don't hold it against the engine with your hand. It could shock the shit
out of you or worse.) Push the starter button. The sparkie should make a
nice phat spark.

If you have a good strong battery, the kill switch on run, fuel and
spark, then explain to the engine that it should start, and try again.

Honestly, that's good advice, but I've personally never had any luck
reasoning with the damn engines in my bikes!

In that case, put up a "For Sale" sign. It will get the hint. }: )
