Well I passed the MSF and have my license!!
I'm 48 yr old man .... 210 lbs and 5' 11"
Can you guys advise me on safety clothing and gear to
buy? I'm ready to buy now. This would be for street
riding and MAYBE light off road riding such as on dual
sport cycle. Weather would be for north Missouri in
spring, summer, fall. Basically war to HOT temps.
Here is what I think I need:
1. Armored jacket for warm to hot weather riding. Joe
Rocket Phoenix jacket?
2. Armored gloves for hot weather riding. Joe Rocket
gloves?
3. Helmet. Don't have a clue here. What ab that new
Bell helmet design?
4. Riding pants. What abt Dragon kevlar jeans without
armor in them? They look like reg street jeans but are
made of kevlar. I don't "think" I would wear armored
pants in hot weather so what abt this option?
5. Some kind of pull on riding boot? Just reg leather
boots? Maybe HD boots?
What you all advise? I'm ready to buy and start
riding!

Congratulations. I advise the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course:
http://www.msf-usa.org/
Here's an inexpensive book that discusses equipment and other things
you should know: http://tinyurl.com/jmckt (This one looks newer:

My summer jacket has *serious* armor. It also has perforations so that
when I'm moving it doesn't feel the least bit warm; the wind blows
right through.

Ha! I read your entire post except for the first line. Open mouth,
insert foot. Smart move, taking the course.

It says "Honda Official Licensed Product."

Glad to hear you took the MSF course. Great program. I did the same in
March 2005. I am about the same size but a few years older. I purchased
the Hein Gerirke Speedway jacket. It is ballistic mesh with armor and
removable waterproof zip out liner.. I made the pruchase from
http://motorcyclecloseouts.com/ . It is a great jacket and you can get a
full description at the site. It was one of six featured in the December
2005 Cycle World mag. I am going to purchase the Gerike mesh overpants to go
with the jacket.
I also purchased a 3/4 THH helmet that is carbon fiber kevlar. It is
approved by both DOT and Snell. Full face helmets offer more protection
however but I cannot yet were a full face. Too enclosed.
I purchased a pair of Durango harness boots from www.sportsmansguide.com .
They are soft and very comfortable however, I do not think they offer the
best ankle protection. I understand a lace boot offers better protection.
Keep in mind that my riding is strictly street (cruiser) and I have no
knowledge concerning dual purpose bike and off road riding. Once you get
the information you need, shop around. I have purchased from a number of
reputable online firms and I am satisfied. To list a few:
