Been through a rough patch lately (personal & financial).
Seems the economy tanked around the same time I did. Sold the Harley,
Honda chopper and my three trikes.
Then lately things started improving, including a discovery coming up
soon pursuant to a minor wipeout 3 years ago on the Virago 250. Woman
in a van coming at me in my own lane on a bridge approach. My right
shoulder is still a bit fragile and the doc sez if it isn't healed
by this time it ain't getting any better.
If the insurance settlement works out I might get some $'s together
for another scoot.
What to get? Some contenders:
* My former Ultra Classic (the guy who bought it would consider
selling it back, if I got creative with the funding)
* Ural with sidecar (Patrol or Gear-up for 2WD in snow). Lose the Dodge
mini van, save on insurance and no annual emission inspection for bikes.
* V-Strom 650. This machine is seriously ugly, but one of the few
modern road bikes with a neutral riding pos'n. Suki obviously forgot
to include fairing lowers; they're available as 3rd party accessories.
* Triumph Bonneville. Baby boomers' nostalgia machine.
* W650 (if I can find one, they're rare around here).
* Older Goldwing (GL1000 - 1200). Comfortable, relatively light weight
(compared to later versions). But likely to break down and strand me
in the boonies?

Well from a coolness standpoint, Ural and the Bonneville win, and the
W650 takes third.
SV650's are pretty damn good bikes. Easy to ride and very quick and
reliable.
My pick would be the new Bonneville line. I'm partial to them.
I had an old 650, and currently ride a Bonneville Speedmaster(which is
the cruiser style)

Welcome back, Sean. Like Clay, I would vote for the modern Bonneville
first. Nice bikes; and actually easier to get parts for than the
W650. Based on my brother's experience with two Urals, I would vote
against them. I have personal experience with the GL1000; having
owned two, and while they're lovely motorcycles, their age does argue
against them in daily use. Others will no doubt vociferously
disagree.
The Ultra, is of course, a lovely alternative.
Good luck, and I hope it all works out!
