I'm going to sell one of my bikes on eBay.
In general, is accepting a bank check from a stranger safe?
What are the most common forms of fraud that the buyer might engage in?
Anything at all I should do to protect myself?
Thanks.

No, not unless you are at his bank and you see them cut the
check. Fraudsters have access to all sorts of fancy printers
and paper stock.

Do you really care what is the most common form of fraud?
Why don't you simply make sure you're not a victim of
any kind of fraud, whether it is common or not?

Insist on cash or get the check in person from his bank.
I really don't know of any other way to make sure you're
not being given a fake check.
Craigslist is a good place to buy and sell bikes- and you
can deal with someone local rather than halfway across the
country as you will do with ebay.

For a small fee I believe that one's local bank might confirm a bank check
with the destination's bank.

Good idea. I'll also check with my bank to see what services they offer.
I do agree with the notion that with printing technology so advanced,
anybody could make a pretty convincing fake check, watermark and all.

Why don't you just announce how much you want for the bike here. Someone might
know someone looking for a bike.
