What is the best way to handle hose clips like these?

The issue is that I've found them to be quite hard to slip over the hose at
the widest portion of the male piece the hose attaches to.
I'm wondering if there is a special tool or technique. I grab them with my
fingers or pliers, but maybe there is a special tool that will open them a
bit further.

Pliers, patience, and expect to exercise your vocabulary.
Or, if you've got some space to play with - forget those
cheap spring clamps, and use the screw-adjust type.

I was hoping there was a special tool to get them just a bit wider open. I
sometimes really have to work to get them over the widest part of the hose
at the attach point.
The darned motorcycle must have 30 or 40 of them holding all those vacuum
and other hoses together.

I've always found it easiest just to put them on the hose before putting
the hose over the fitting. Put the clip where you want it, and then
just push the hose on. The fitting expands the hose and clip at the
same time.

Outback Jon's suggestion sounds like a good one.
