On hot summer days I like to dress in shorts and sandals
and go riding and feel the cool breeze on my skin.

There, I said it.

Now I am well aware of the hard, abrasive black stuff
going by at 60 mph just inches under my feet and
a few other potential hazards, so I'm careful.

Shrug.

It's your epidermis, but I've seen the results of pavement surfing up close
and personal -a girl at our track school who'd fallen off the back of an
R-1 during a wheelie on the freeway while wearing nothing but shorts, a tank
top, and -thank God- a helmet. Not only did the pavement sandpaper off
major portions of her skin, tattoos included, but she'd actually ground
about an inch off of her left hipbone as well.

No thank you.

I know that a little is better than nothing, but how much protection will
blue jeans and a tee shirt actually provide when one experiences an
involuntary dismount at speed? How many 'serious' riders actually wear
leather every time they swing a leg over the saddle? Also, be aware of your
precious cargo everytime you carry a passenger. The issue in the
aforementioned example is the absolute idiot pulling stunts with the young
lady riding pillion. On another note, I will no longer refrain from calling
anyone a fool in trying to justify not wearing a helmet for safety reasons.
One chooses not to wear a helmet for reasons of vanity or comfort, not
because of the erroneous reasons that the helmet supposedly blocks your
peripheral vision, impedes your ability to hear or could cause a neck
injury. Your choice on the helmet, just be honest as to why. Same for
"loud pipes saves lives." Big woofers rolling on 22s in an old Impala with
the base thumping Snoop Dogg at 120db saves lives, too, if you wish to
continue with that line of reasoning. I have, on my sidecar rig, an air
horn with not one, but two, compressors. If someone looks as if they may be
thinking of pulling out in front of me, and I do my best to be situationally
aware, I blast them with 140 db. Not to be mean, but to stay alive and
raise the consciousness of the cage pilot. Further, I have photon emitter
(light) mounted on the hack that will start small fires at ten yards. I
will be seen, and if necessary, I will be heard. Two fingers hovering on
the front brake whenever in traffic and my left thumb resting on the horn
button. I ride as if I am invisible.

Except for a short ride at very low speed I wouldn't even
consider taking a passenger on any bike with an absurdly
small pillion pad and only a tiny strap to hang on to.

OTOH my Electra Glide has a fully equipped passenger
lounge with a back rest, elbow supports, grab rails
and independent speaker volume control.

I dislike the helmet laws here (BC, Canada) and wish there was
some legal way to ride without one, especially on warm days.
For example the Sikhs here acquired a quasi-legal excuse to ride
helmetless due to the turbans they wear for religious reasons.

However, the closest place I can legally ride on roads
without a helmet is Idaho, which means I'd have to ride
to the West Kootenays and cross the line south of Creston;
Idaho would benefit from my tourist dollars only because
of its helmet law!

Of course I can always ride off-road without a helmet.

The whole issue reminds me of life jackets -- it seems
ironic that people world-wide messed about in boats
of every description for millions of years without
bothering with life jackets. Imagine an Algonquin
paddling a birch bark canoe wearing some flotation
contraption made of a walrus bladder or something.

Then governments and parliaments came along and imposed
safety rules on a not altogether willing public.

In Canada (where life jacket laws are federal) we're
only required to have one in the boat for each
passenger, but we're not actually required to *wear*
the thing. Now that would be cool if the same idea
applied to helmets and motorcycles.
