It's hard to tell from the pic but the shot was near 50 yards. I got lucky
he was in the same row of trees that I was.

I went and had another look at the pic, that gap between the trees was
the only open space, look to the left or right and it's all blocked by
trees. Is it some sort of govt. plantation you have access to?

Yup. It's state land which is public. Since most guys like to get way into
the woods and look for a monster bucks, I pretty much have this area to
myself being so close to home. Sold old farts do a drive to the south of
here and I've found that the deer who survive (most of them) like to come to
this area and rest. If you follow between the row of trees to the
bright/clear area way at the end, that's the highway, a slight bit uphill so
I know my shot won't go astray. I took the picture where I took the shot.
About 100 feet in front of me is a logging trail that intersects this row.
The buck was about another 100 feet on the other side of the trail. He
stood and peeked around a tree to the left of the row. Only his head and
shoulder were visible since he was at an angle quartering towards me. If
you look at the hanging deer pic, I shoved the arrow thru the bullet path.
I like going back the next day and take a pic of the site where I get them
and check out the gut pile to see if anything else has been around. Usually
a fox and a lot of chickadees feeding on the fat.

I'm jealous. Are you allowed to ride the logging trails in these
forests?.....and are you allowed to hunt with handguns (something I'd
love to have a go at!)?

Any state land that isn't posted, gated or bermed is open to street legal
vehicle riding. In my county ATV's are not allowed anywhere, so I bought
the TW200, a street legal vehicle and you bet I ride it on those logging
trails! When I'm in the mood to scout other hunting areas, I hope on that
bike and go for miles. Much of the area in northern Wisconsin is state
owned forest land and for the most part, all public access. I can go 15
minutes out my driveway in any direction and be on state land or a lake. I
love it up here and wouldn't trade it for anything.
A handgun can be used for hunting, something about the length of the barrell
though. I know my Redhawk meets the legal size requirement but I couldn't
hit the side of a barn with it.
Up in Michigan, I had a friend with a TW and he would carry his cased
shotgun over his shoulder and go bird hunting. I'd do that too, but then
there's no place to carry the yellow lab, Cobber. He prefers the truck.
