I'm not seeing what is so stupid.
Assuming one wants to do wheelies, I'm assuming that the first several times
are the riskiest, as one is learning how far is too far, what control
actions are required to sustain the wheelie without going over, etc.
I see the following advantages to the course:
a)There is professional coaching about how to initiate the wheelie and how
to control it.
b)There is a wheelie bar to keep from going over.
c)There will others around who can summon emergency aid.
One can debate whether it makes sense to do wheelies at all, but this isn't
a credible debate because we all know that people will do them regardless,
so one might as well make it as safe as possible to learn.
This is the same argument about condoms, sterile needles, etc. that Dr. Koop
made. We all know that people are going to be sexually active and injecting
IV drugs, so might as well make it as safe as possible.
Am I missing something?

Except that in this case, we're talking about the apparent promotion
of an activity that involves considerable risk to *other people*.
Unless, of course, you assume that all the precocious little tykes
who will be attending this course are OF COURSE going to
limit their further practice to closed courses, and would never,
EVER even THINK about doing a wheelie on the public roads.

Usually, yes.

Be real, Bob.
Before I ever learned to ride a motorcycle I watched lots of reckless
behavior.
I've never seen anyone operate a motorcycle recklessly in a residential
area.
Most of what I've seen is kids popping wheelies on the interstate and riding
them for a while. Typically, the traffic just backs off and gets ready to
dial 911. Naturally, if there were a police officer nearby, they would be
cited and/or arrested.
Is this going to kill anyone besides the cyclist? Possible, but not very
likely. I'm just not seeing a sportbike penetrating a Ford Explorer from
the rear. (Why does that last sentence sound so wrong?)
Maybe you've seen more serious bad behavior, but wheelies on the interstate
or on a medium-speed road (45 MPH and up) aren't usually going to kill
anyone besides the motorcyclist.
Alternate opinions?

It's kind of a stupid and pointless skill to be cultivating
in the first place, let alone going to somebody's
"school" to do it. WTF could possibly be that important
about getting people's attention ?
