My ride seems a little rough sometimes.  It seemed to be running a little
rough when I started it today.  Today I had it out on the freeway (already
warmed up for about 2 miles on the roads and 5 miles on the freeway) coming
to work and gave it full throttle.  Only made it to 90 MPH, even when I
leaned forward to minimize air resistance.  That caught my eye because in
past years top speed was around 95+ MPH.

About two miles later I tried it again.  This time it hit 95 and was going
to go over 95 but I had to back down because of traffic in front of me.  It
also seemed to be smoother the second time.

I'm thinking either (a) fouled plug that cleared, (b) the ignition
controller is getting bad inputs (throttle position sensor weird, causing
bad timing of the spark?), (c) something with the coil, (d) changing wind
conditions, or (e) my imagination.

Any thoughts?

My guess is that the power difference required to go 90 vs. 95 is probably
about 10% (as the square of the velocity).

Thanks, Datesfat

Plus it needs a service.

If you don't know what you're doing, don't do it. And RTFM.

Thanks for your input.

What kind of service?  I've had all the recommended stuff done.

Thanks, Datesfat

But if it's the gas, and you always get the same gas from the
same supplier - why would it be intermittent?  I'm assuming
that the "intermittent" behavior isn't correlated to something
obvious, like temperature...

You are correct.  There are some parts of the story I'm not telling.  For
example, I gassed up yesterday on the way home (about 3/4 mile from my
apartment), and I don't know how long it is taking for the gas to work its
way through the fuel line and carburetor doo-dads.  Today's improvement
could have been tied to the newer fuel making its way through.

And I have no guarantee that the loads the service station gets are always
consistent.

And sometimes I gas up other places.

There is enough there that the fuel explanation is plausible.  I would want
some guaranteed best-possible gas to try for a couple tanks.

Plausible enough to look at further.
