Cruising CL locally, I spotted what appears to be a screaming deal on a
'73 Sportster. Since I have some cash burning a hole in my pocket and
mind, is $1500 for a running version a decent deal? I don't plan on
riding it far or fast, mainly as a commuter to and from work, along
with some weekend fun. Pros/cons to the old versions?

I'll be headed over this evening to check it out, but at that price, I
may just be a returning HD rider.

That's a screamin' good deal - make sure it's not a scam ! If I was going
over to look at that bike , with the money in my pocket and an intent to
purchase , I'd take a friend along who is well armed . Just sounds too good
to be true ...

It was. It didn't last long enough for me to get there. After talking
to the guy, it turns out it was one of the local chopper shops moving a
customer's bike for him. Sold before 2PM today. I got off at 6.
I've located a very proper 1996 Triumph Trophy 1200 in British Racing
Green sitting in Waukesha, WI for a good price. One of my local
friends took a gander at it today for me and reports it's in fine
shape. Calls will be made tomorrow and probably a deposit given. Time
to find out if they'll pick me up at the train station in M'walkee on
Friday afternoon. Road trip! I hope the wife forgives me for leaving
again after getting home late Saturday from Germany. Ahhh, I'll miss
her. ;)

T312? Or the earlier model with the more steeply raked windscreen? The
312 is a better bet, comfort-wise. Of course, if it's seriously cheap,
buy oy anyway, and spend the money you saved on filling the thing up.

The newer style. I had a '95-first year in the States version back a
few years ago. This model is much more comfy. Of all my Triumphs, the
gas mileage has always been about 40-42 unless it's allowed to breathe
heavily.
