I earn a living computer programming, but one thing I always hated was
developing applications for the Web.  Just too tedious and ricketty.

Well, that's now changing.  Because it has to!  My new job requires me
to do nothing else but Web development (even though I told them in the
interview that's the thing I'm worst at, so go figure).

But, now that I'm getting more into it...  you know, it's not all that
bad.  And, for practice, I'm diverting my spare time to my own
Website.  I'll be converting all the content from the old site
(stories and techinical info) over to the new site and adding a lot of
new features once that's done (Blogs, anyone?).

I just started a day ago, so there's only a couple of stores
transferred over right now and just simple picture on the main page,
but it will be changing fast.

The old site is still there at http://www.xidos.ca   The new,
under-construction site is at http://www.xidos.ca/RGD

The reason I'm posting this is that, while the work is under way, if
you want to make a suggestion or two (limit of 2 per person! ;) on how
to make it better, let me have it.

P.S.  For the geeks out there, I'm using DotNetNuke 4.9.1.

...and I like it!

Just curious, I don't see any active content (I just skimmed it) at the new
site.

You doing database development, organizing static content, or something
else?

It needs popups and advertising.

It also needs some of those darned boxes that come up asking you if you want
to take a survey.

It needs some very virus-scarey stuff  ... notice that something has been
installed, for example.

I like the trip pictures.  The font is pleasing, and the pics are just about
the right size.

You look pretty weathered for a computer programmer.  I hope you have some
junior colleagues to smack around.  I've found that to be a stress reliever.

That should be no surprise.  I just started building the site
yesterday!  <g>

There?  Just making a Website.  But yeah, I do database development
and other stuff as needed.

Heh, heh.  Okay.

Actually, I do have a survey module with the framework I'm using.

Thanks.

At my age and in that type of business, almost everyone's a junior to
me.  ;)

I'm sure you understood I was joking.  I find those things annoying.

The most annoying ones are the ones at Taco Bell, Wendy's, etc.  They want
me to participate in a survey to be entered in a raffle to win $1,000.
Well, let's think about that:

a)I have no proof that the money is actually given away to anyone.

b)If 10,000 people take the survey and they do give away $1,000, the
expected value is $0.10.  I don't think so.

And then there are the phone researchers calling asking me to take surveys
with similar enticement (entry in a raffle).  I always tell them to send the
check first, then call.

I often wonder how reliable the data they gather is.  Only gullible
individuals with time to burn take those things.

Well, you know, the idea of surveys isn't all that off the wall in my
opinion.  In fact, years ago, I built a Website dedicated for Reeky
use that provided survey capability. [1]

I look at it as sort of a mildly interesting thing (not to be taken
too seriously) - just like they do for some news shows, asking people
to register their opinion on some question.  And then, later, people
can see how many votes went one way or the other.  So long as the
mechanism is built in to prevent repeat votes from single individuals
(easy to accomplish).

For instance, a question could be:  "Is it time to stop the sniping at
Krusty and give him and opportunity to make a fresh start (sans the
racism propaganizing)?"

[1]  It was written in ASP in the pre-.NET days and just got to be too
much of a pain to maintain the code.
