Keeping dry in the rain

 For a long while I've been looking for a bike with a roof
for our cold, wet westcoast winters. BMW came out with the C1,
but soon canceled it (over a dispute about seat belts as I recall).

Then some hyper-expensive Chinese product showed up briefly
at a local Honda dealership (Richmond Motorsports, BC Canada)
but they dropped the line due to poor build quality.

Now I wonder whether there is (or I could design) a self-folding-
and-unfolding umbrella or awning that would deploy when I'm
stopped and retract when I start moving. It would probably look
something like a convertible car roof which unfolds up from the rear.

Even better if it could latch onto the windshield and be strong enough
to withstand riding speeds.

A motorcycle just doesn't have enough tires on the ground to be stable
in the wet.

You want a convertible, buy a *car* with a convertible top.

I've owned four convertibles and they are really nice on sunny days,
but they are cold in bad weather even with the top up.

The downsides to convertible tops are:

1. No roll over protection unless the designer included a roll bar;

2. Tops weather in the sun and rot;

3. You never know when a vandal is going to slash your top or a thief
is going to slash his way into the car to steal your stuff.
