They also get (and I'm not saying you can't get this but I don't
know where you can) a lot of practice doing all sorts of
interesting emergency maneuvers that are really hard on bikes,
like jumping curbs, sliding the bike on its side, etc.  And they
learn a lot of impressive low speed maneuvering skills too.  I
would love to be able to take one of their courses.

Maybe I should just get a stunt bike and go for it!

One field day promoter had an interesting event instead of the slow race.
They laid out a tight course on a paved lot with pylons. We took turns
riding it and got disqualified for hitting a pylon or going off course.
They made the corners tighter on each round ... and so on.  One would think
the smaller bikes would win easily - but no!  It ended up a contest between
four motor cops on their big Harleys!  I was truly amazed at what they could
make them do and I own one.

Of course they got all offended when I wondered how many tires they had to
mark to learn to ride like that <g>.

If I remember correctly, Motorcycle Consumer News had a writeup of one guy's
experience attending a real motor cop training course.  They really beat up
the bikes during the course, but it makes sense from their perspective to
give these guys the best skills that can be achieved.  When you think about
the risks we take every time we ride, should an intelligent rider (yeah, I
know) settle for anything less?

It's a whole lot easier to learn slow-speed maneuvers, slides, and curb
jumping when you don't have to pay for the damages done to the bike.

If I only had some taxpayer money to wreck a few bikes....

Think that might be why the motor cops got offended by my suggestion?
