No let's not talk about should we or shouldn't we. I had in mind
discussing how best to fit a helmet.
Here is a link to one of those Jay Leno's Garage segments. His guest
is Bruce Porter a representative of Arai.

Although they raised the question of having a helmet that fits
properly and made reference to taking the proper measurements to
identify the correct size they didn't expand on how to take the
measurements and relate them back to the various sizes. Once I have
some time I'll see if there is more info on their website.
They do discuss whether a helmet should be replaced if it is dropped
and talk about the effect of custom painting a helmet. I seem to
recall those topics being discussed several times around here.
It's an interesting segment. Worth a look.
I think it's time to retire my helmet. It's almost five years old,
it's been banged around a bit, fits very loosely and has some really
obscene sweat patterns in the lining.
Too much information? Yeah I thought so.
In considering a helmet, to me after protection, fit is the most
important factor to consider. I like the concept of having different
sizes of cheek pads, etc. available. Having an odd sized head the more
flexibility in the padding available, to provide a proper fit, the
better.
Noise reduction is also high on my list of important factors.Yes I
know about ear plugs. I just can't wear them, never have been able to.
Sometime this winter I'll pick up a new hat. I hope I get one that is
a good fit, in more ways than one.

I found it very interesting as well. It cleared up several misconceptions I
had. Thanks for posting the link.

The organizations I race with tell me what certifications the helmet
must have. As for the actual selection process I go to dealerships.
If there prices are out of line with other dealers I don't even bother
trying any helmets on. If their prices are reasonable and I find a
helmet that feels as good or better than the one I have been using I
buy it, right there, on the spot. Going home and ordering the same
helmet for less on line is not an option for me. I feel the dealer
deserves the extra bucks for making the helmets available to me to try
on. It is required that we replace a helmet if the manufacture date
exceeds three years old, so I check that to be sure the helmet hasn't
been sitting on the shelf for a year.

Most of my helmets have been 'hand-me-downs' but the few I have brought,
come off the shelf in the bike shop. I don't know of any requirement for
helmets to become 'out of date', so to speak. As soon as I get a helmet,
all the stickers come off anyway. Where is the date stamp?
