My trusty old Gpz expired a while back and I am looking for a
replacement. I already have a ninja sportbike that is just too
painfull for general use. I am looking for something with minimal
plastic bodywork, decent range on a tank of fuel, light weight,
competent handling and, most importantly, a more upright riding
position. Fuel injection, water cooling and a proper gas gauge would
be nice but not required. It would need to be something I could find
used since I have under (US) $4000 to spend. Honda has screwed me more
than once so no Hondas for me.

I have looked at the Kawasaki ZR series bikes, suzuki SV650, Bandits
and some others. I would consider a Beemer but they are usually either
out of my price range or pretty old. Any comments?

Half faired Suzuki 1200 Bandit.

Have a look at the Suzuki cruisers. Depending on your size and the type of
riding you have in mind, something in their line should "fit". GZ250, S40,
S/M/C50, etc.

Nothing wrong with the Bandit 1200 or the SV6.5 for that price. I'd also
throw in the Wee Strom which is a remarkably comfortable bike for most.
The Bandit is too, but the SV a lot less so.

I personally enjoy d/s thumper types. Depending on what you wish to do,
you can also throw in the KLR, DRZ 400 or DR6.5 for under your budget. I
personally will not be w/o a d/s bike as these take me anywhere I wish
to go.

Personal recommendation for an SV650. I have one. I love it. I have
exactly zero complaints in 9 months and 9K miles.
