Milwaukee's MC noise ordinance oasysco 08-10-2008

According to the AMA, Milkwaukee has a MC noise ordinance that allows
citizens to bring cases against MC'ists for noise pollution by simply
reporting that the MC was too loud without measuring how loud. The AMA
wonders how this will affect the big HD event at end of August.

Found this on the 'net but didn't see anything about MC noise in it
since it's targeted at "bass busters"...

And this newspaper article for last month... "The sheriff said he only
hopes to =93give a little peace=94 to those living on major streets who
have to hear some of the area=92s 8,600 registered motorcycles rev their
engines."

and motorcycles makes it clear that alderman are considering widening

        Hard to see how that could ever be allowed to stand. What if
A is pissed at B, and just makes a regular habit of 'reporting' them (
or getting others to ) ? With no proof, just an allegation, B gets $
100 fines once a month ? I doubt it. Never stand up in court.

But the ordinance encourages this. Like you, I can't imagaine it
holding up in court, but think of how much of a PITA it would be to be
hauled into court over and over again since it costs citizens nothing
other than swearing out a complaint.

What PITA? You show proof you have nothing but stock pipes on the
bike. Problem solved...they should let you know whom the complaintant
is. After that dealing with the issue is a no brainer, just have a
nice civil conversation. Find out what their problem is, help them
work through their issues. Mentor them, get them to ride pillion with
you a time or two (play nice, be gentle it's a virgin) give them a
lift to their MSF course, suggest good starter bikes.

If that doesn't work run them out of town.

Unless you don't have stock pipes.
“No person shall modify the exhaust system of any such motor vehicle
in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted.”

How do they know if the aftermarket pipes are louder? Do they have a
database of every model and its stock decibel output?
"A Harley without any modifications has a rating of about 80 decibels,
slightly louder than a vacuum cleaner." That means if I put
aftermarket pipes on my bike, which is ~40db stock, and it goes up to
50db, it's against the law. And if someone puts pipes on their Harley
that raises the volume 2db, it's also against the law.

The law is worded badly.
