No wonder why no one ever hears of deer strikes on a Ducati:
[quote]
1. "My brakes squeal. Is there anything I can do to restore my dignity?"
Squeal can be caused by the vibrating of some mass, in this case, hard
or soft spots or hot/cold spots in the disk material, warped disks, or
glazed pads. There can be other causes too numerous to mention. Two
possible solutions to change the vibration frequency:
A) Damp the vibrating brake pad with a copper shim or some type of
goo. This'll change the frequency enough that it will pass out of the
annoying range (for you, maybe not for dogs and deer). The copper shim
between the piston and pad back decouples the the high frequency
vibration that is being transmitted as "squeal," the copper acting as a
bearing surface.

Now that Buells are no longer sold, the next best deer repellent is a
Ducati, provided one does the above measure.

I read an article a few weeks back that noted Erik is going to keep
the brand alive under the banner of Erik Buell Racing. They will
specialize in the production of race use only Buell parts and race
prep services. If you really want to buy a Buell they will produce an
1125r race only motorcycle.
I think the brand is like the Indian. It will change, morph, evolve
from one form to another, but never really disappear.
I hope Erik sees nothing but success in his new venture.

I agree. I hate to see a motorcycle brand die.
Only thing though is the upcoming EPA rules, which AFAIK, will kill the
air cooled motor. It happened to the VW Beetle. Air cooled motor could
not meet EPA.
I think this is why Harley came up with the water cooled motor in one of
their sport machines, V-Rod. The motor designed by Porche, IIRC.
Haven't kept up with the rule changes, but AFAIK, it would spell the
death knell to custom building motorcycle shops.

No, they'd just have to spend a little time working around radiator
installation.
Didn't Buell switch to a liter-size water cooled Rotax engine right before
Harley pulled his plug?

I like to see the independents bucking the big manufacturer or big
distributor machines, every once in a while, and Erik has been
persistent. Good on him.

Harley is not the only one out there building big v-twins. Yamaha has
built their cruiser line around the big twin air cooled engine.
Granted they also have water cooled engines to fall back on if
required, but right now they are relying on the Liner and Star air
cooled v-twins to power their cruisers.

I haven't read much on bikes and EPA regs for a while either. I
suspect there may be some exceptions worked into the regs for the
custom builders. Since emissions are closely tied to tuning, I could
also see the manufacturers continue to lean out the engines, and let
the end user fix them. It might take annual testing to ensure the
bikes are not modified within nano seconds of leaving the showroom
floor.
Fortunately, if we ever see that kind of testing, like annual vehicle
mechanical inspections, Alberta will be the last in line to implement
the procedures.
